Union Claims Caterers Scanning Luggage during UK Airport Strike

Striking airport bag handlers said employers had breached safety procedures by bringing in caterers to operate luggage scanners.

About 30 members of the GMB union stopped operating luggage scanners at Stansted Airport for a day following a pay dispute with employer Airfield Services.

The union said bosses had responded by using catering staff to plug the gap.

Leaders said they would complain to airport owner BAA and Government transport ministers.

"The company has brought in catering workers to operate security scanners today, which is a clear breach of security standards laid down for this airport," said GMB general secretary Paul Kenny.

`"We will be raising the issue with the transport secretary and BAA to ask when this company was given the right to lower security standards because of a trade dispute."

Staff began the 24-hour strike at around 3 a.m. after rejecting a 1.5 percent pay offer.
